Just telling the insurance company what you think you had is not going to work in your favor.

Insurance companies and adjusters require detailed information on your property to prove ownership and establish its value. Keep all important and necessary documents safe. Keep a copy of your home inventory in a fire proof safe, and also keep a copy off-site. Often people will give a copy to their estate lawyer, to be attached to their will. Also, giving copies to your children lets they know exactly what is in your estate. This can help diminish those estate arguments later. Flood Damage Emergency Instructions:
1. Stay Calm. Make sure the water is turned off at the main valve. Write down what caused the damage.
2. Ensure your family’s safety by turning off the electricity in affected rooms and then unplugging all appliances (then turning on the power once more). If the ceilings are sagging, stay away from those areas until a professional arrives.
3. Remove standing water with a vacuum cleaner that is rated wet/dry. Standard vacuum cleaners SHOULD NOT BE USED!
4. Move undamaged items that are susceptible to getting wet to unaffected areas. If water is seeping in through the ceiling, protect your belongings from further damage by covering them with plastic.
5. Move expensive items or delicate items such as crystal, vases, keepsakes, etc. and put them in a safe place where they won't be damaged.
6. Promptly separate items that can transfer color, such as furniture, area rugs, bedding, upholstery skirts, draperies and colored couch cushions from sofas and chairs.
7. Move wet area rugs and other detachable floor coverings and place them outdoors, away from your home.
8. Pin up draperies and upholstery skirts to prevent water circles. A quick fix is using a coat hanger and attaching it onto the curtain rod or placing the bottoms of the draperies in a plastic bag.
9. Protect carpet and furniture from permanent staining by placing squares of aluminum foil, Styrofoam or plastic bags between the furniture legs and wet carpet. If using foil, each square should have three layers of thickness.
10. Remove lamps, telephones and decorative items from wet furniture tops.
